HOSMAC, a healthcare planning and consulting firm, has developed the Hospital Energy Analysis Tool (HEAT) to help architects and healthcare planners assess energy requirements and identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency during hospital design. The digital tool combines active and passive energy modelling to support early-stage planning, manage long-term operating costs and promote environmentally responsible healthcare infrastructure.

Hospitals operate around the clock and require substantial electricity for cooling, ventilation, and specialised medical equipment. According to the National Hospital Energy Consumption Survey conducted under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, hospitals accounted for approximately 9% of India's commercial electricity consumption in the 2019–20 financial year, using an estimated 9.7 billion units of electricity annually.

HEAT comprises two main components. The Space Program Designer uses a database of disease management groups and associated hospital departments to estimate space requirements and cooling needs. For general multispecialty hospitals, it maps more than 800 rooms across over 40 departments. Its questionnaire-based interface enables planners to generate an initial hospital programme within minutes.

The second component, the Building Mass-Volume Explorer, evaluates hospital building layouts and orientations based on plot requirements, ground coverage, and built-up area. Using a genetic evolutionary algorithm and solar irradiation analysis, it helps architects identify configurations that may reduce heat gain during peak-load hours. According to HOSMAC's estimates, ecologically informed design strategies could reduce costs associated with incident heat by 30%–50%, depending on the site's characteristics. These figures are estimates and are not guaranteed savings for every project.

The development follows HOSMAC's introduction of the Urban Health Data Platform, a digital tool designed to map healthcare facilities and provide insights into India's healthcare infrastructure. Together, these initiatives reflect the growing use of data analytics and computational design in healthcare planning, with a focus on balancing clinical requirements, energy efficiency, financial sustainability, and environmental responsibility.
